Flying Starship Enterprises formerly Block Petrella Weisbord

Flying Starship Enterprises formerly Block Petrella Weisbord Publishing provides The Flying Starship® an exercise created by William O. Lytle to demonstrate the value of applying sociotechnical principles to develop high-performance organizations. The Flying Starship incorporates major insights from Marvin Weisbord's book, Productive Workplaces: Organizing and managing for Dignity, Meaning, and Community (Jossey-Bass, 1987).

Get employees "on board" with change efforts

The pace of change today is unrelenting. "Continuous improvement" has become the norm for most companies. The push for improved financial results, higher productivity, more sales, improved service and lower cost reflects the competitive nature of the global economy. The problem is the disconcerting effect change has on employees-new demands are placed on them, while the outcomes are uncertain.

A proven solution - The Flying Starship

The Flying Starship is an experiential simulation aimed at helping organizations deal with changes that affect employees. It allows participants at all levels to discover "participative change" first hand, without risk, prior to application in a real work setting. "Participative change" or "employee involvement" is critical to successful change efforts.

How does The Flying Starship work?

The object of The Flying Starship learning tool is for participants to manufacture paper Starships in a traditional, closely supervised work system. Quality is monitored and the finished product is delivered to a discriminating customer.

Bringing along experiences from this "Production Run," the participants then divide into Design Teams. During that phase they create innovative "high-performance" systems that are put to the test in a "Second Production Run." The teams are lead through an analysis of their breakthroughs and how they relate to their own actual workplaces.

Participants benefit by exploring the implications that are so necessary to understand how these improvements affect their own working conditions: changes in productivity, quality, worker involvement, and customer satisfaction. This is the "ah-ha"-a clear vision of their own stake in their organization and how to make these changes occur.

Common applications for The Flying Starship:

Restructuring
Culture Change/Merger
Process Improvement
Quality
Teambuilding

With The Flying Starship participants learn:

How structure, information flow, and reward systems impact output, quality and job satisfaction.
How to use teamwork to align work processes to dramatically improve results.
How employee knowledge of all elements of business-economic, technical, social-is the basis for continuous improvement.
How there many "right" ways to design work to improve results and not one set way. However, all effective methods have employee involvement in common.
