Mando™ Measuring success

Mando is a learning tool that helps people decide on the performance measures that are most relevant for them. Mando can help everyone work smarter, set the right priorities and make the best decisions to improve business performance and value.

Why Mando?

General management literature tends to treat traditional financial ratios as a standard procedure applicable to all business. But while these ratios may indicate the overall financial health of an organization and its operating efficiency, they do not provide the measures of the day-to-day operations that allow managers to succeed.

Until now, you had to be an expert in a particular business or business unit to know what to measure to create value and profit.

Identify success factors for business growth

Many companies centralize when it comes to planning strategy and setting vision, but decentralize when it comes to operative responsibilities-people must think about, plan for, execute and evaluate activities for their own divisions, units, departments or teams.

In one day Mando can help everyone understand that your organization consists of different types of businesses that all work together toward a common goal, but have different challenges and characteristics-they have different "business logics." Based on research from Dr. Eric Giertz and published in his book, "Measuring Success Identifying Performance Indicators" Mando makes use of Mr. Giertz's 21 different "business logics" as he calls them. Business logic is very simply the underlying logic of a business that, when executed successfully, allows the business to create value and make a profit. But, like steel mills and resturants, different businesses do very different things, they must employ different business logic to create value and ensure profitability.

Through Dr. Giertz's work Mando pulls back the mystery from 21 different types of operations and lays out the performance indicators that reveal how to go the hearth of the "business logic." For example, in a contract manufacturing business typical performance indicators are capacity utilization, labor productivity and jobs redone. In the air cargo business, on the other hand, performance indicators that determine health of the business are overhead per mile, transport time and cargo damage.

How does Mando work?

During Mando, participants work with a case company that has many different business units, and they are challenged to increase productivity for one of them. The case company is introduced using a series of WorkMat based learning tools which engages participants in a highly interactive cooperative learning experience. Along the way they are introduced to Dr. Giertz's model of the 21 "business logics" which guide the participant to the most appropriate performance measures and identify specific actions to take (what gets measured gets done") and how to monitor results.

The Payoff - Your own operation

With the case fresh in the participants mind, Mando then takes the participants through a final WorkMat learning tool where they are guided toward identifying the appropriate performance indicators for their business or business unit.
